I need a haircut. Badly.
The problem is that I live in Moreno Valley, and, well, there are a lot of non-white people here. Hair is a peculiar thing: it's one thing that undisputedly different among races (the other being, similarly undisputedly, skin color, although I'm willing to bet there are many other physiological aspects that differ). Asian hair tends to be tough, black hair curly, and white hair tends to be fair. Mexicans, I dunno. But my neighborhood is a fair mix of all of these races. What, then, am I to do?
Two barbers have set up their fine establishments near the house. I was reasonably frightened off by the first: Carlos' Barber Shop. Carlos. What would happen if I went in there? Would I be ridiculed as a gringo? Does the fellow know how to cut a white person's hair?
The other shop: Mr Eds Barbers. ok, maybe this is a white guy. Hell no, it's a lot of black people in the joint.
Is it ok to be barber racist? I don't know. But my bigotry affects me the way it affects no other bigot. My hair is fucking long, and I have to live with it because I'm ig'nant.
